The vascular and the nervous systems show striking anatomical similarities. Both nerves and blood vessels ramify throughout nearly all domains of the body. Analogous to arterial and venous blood flow, the directionality of information flow in the nervous system is controlled by subdivisions into motor and sensory pathways. Like blood vessels with their mural and ECs, the nerves comprise two intimately associated cell types, neurons and glial cells. In addition to these morphological features, it has been recently discovered that the development of the vascular and nervous system is controlled by common molecular mechanisms. Among the genes controlling neural as well as vascular development, our group has shown arterial-specific expression of the NRP-1 receptor and selective expression of NRP-2 in veins and lymphatic vessels. The growth of lymphatic vessels is perturbed in NRP-2-deficient mice. We have recently examined the expression of other molecules known to be involved in neural development in the vascular system and our results suggest to study other neural genes emerging from the bioinformatics analysis.
